The Aquitaine coast has an exceptional chain of ponds arranged parallel to the coast. This unique landscape heritage in Europe deserves our attention given its remarkable character. This landscape is the result of a very ancient evolution while the current human settlement is very recent.
Today, the commune consists of three distinct sectors
An oceanic coastal sector of 1400 hectares, enclosed between ocean and lake on which extends the Directorate General of Armament, missile tests (DGAEM).
- A lake area, consisting of part of the lake, occupies 850 hectares, bordered by beaches, harbour basins and marsh areas often wooded constituting wetlands rich in specific flora and deciduous trees.
- An urbanized area of 1,250 hectares has more than 828 inhabitants (INSEE 2020) in the middle of agricultural and forestry land.
Gastes, flowery village
The town holds the label "Towns and Villages in Bloom - 2 Flowers".
The award criteria, originally dedicated to the aesthetic quality of flowering, have gradually given a preponderant place to the way landscaped spaces are developed and managed, to enhance the quality of life of residents and visitors.
